Free hedge calculator
Stake your original stake times its price, divided by the price on the other side. That makes both results pay the same amount. It leaves a profit only if the two prices' implied chances add to less than 100%; otherwise it caps a loss. Enter your bet and the other price below.

Worked example. A $100 bet at 3.00, with the other side now at 1.60: hedge stake = $100 x 3.00 / 1.60 = $187.50. Either outcome returns $300.00, so the result is +$12.50 after both stakes. With the other side at 1.80 against an original 2.00 the same hedge returns $200.00 on $211.11 staked: -$11.11, which caps a loss rather than locking in a profit.
What it assumes. A two-outcome market and a hedge that is backed at a bookmaker (use the back and lay calculator for an exchange). It ignores the chance that the price moves before you place the hedge, and a hedge gives up the chance of the larger outcome in return for a certain result at those prices.

You place a bet on the other outcome after your first bet, so the result is less dependent on which side wins. Done fully, both outcomes pay the same.
No. It does only when the original price and the new price together imply less than 100% (the book is under 100%). Otherwise a full hedge locks in a smaller loss than the one you risk, which can still be worth doing.
If you believe the original price was good value, hedging gives some of that value away. Hedging trades expected value for a smaller spread of results, so it is a choice about risk, not a way to make a bet better.
Yes. Enter a smaller original stake, or stake less than the full hedge: any amount between nothing and the full hedge sits between the two extremes.
